FINANCIAL STATUS OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

The superintendent stated the school board is in the process of holding budget development workshops.  The next workshop is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, at the DeLand Administrative Complex.    To view information from the two previous workshops, go to the district’s website at www.volusia.k12.fl.us and click on School District Budget Crisis Information.  The PowerPoint presentations are available, as well as School Board Notes and the audio broadcast. A tentative budget is scheduled to be adopted in July with the final budget adoption in mid-September.

Even with the federal stabilization dollars, Volusia will receive $9.7 million less from the state for the 2009-10 school year than it did this school year.  However, budget reductions are expected to be $19.1 million due to declining enrollment; the state funding formula (DCD), which results in fewer dollars for Volusia compared to neighboring counties; a new state requirement for a three percent nonreserved fund balance; and increased costs for items such as utilities and health insurance. The district has already identified $8.3 million in savings and will discuss the remaining $10.8 million shortfall at the workshop on June 23.
